The Lanterman Act
The Lanterman Developmental Disabililities Services Act, called the Lanterman Act for short, was passed in 1969. This law says that people with developmental disabilities have a right to get the services and supports they need to live like other people who don't have disabilities.
The Lanterman Act says people who receive services from Regional Centers have the right to decide what kind of help they want so they can make choices about:
- Where and with whom you want to live with
- Where to work and what type of work to do
- Who your friends are
- What you like to do in your free time
- What you want to do next year or maybe later on.
