Leadership Series/Community Service Participation
San Diego People First teamed up with Area Board XIII and presented a workshop series on leadership and community services in 2006 as part of a grant project funded by the Tarjen Center of UCLA.Representatives from each local self-advocacy group were invited to send two representatives and participate.We covered a lot of material and the attendees participated in several hands on activities. We talked about ground rules, leadership, communication, self-esteem and personal strengths, problem solving, personal and group organization, and each of the attendees wrote an I believe statement. They also took home a "take me kit" that included leadership development material and exercises for their respective groups.
We regard that everyone has a fundamental right to contribute to the well being of the community at large, especially individuals with developmental disabilities. For too long we have been regarded simply as recipients of society's benevolence. We want to give back and contribute to society as part of the community in inclusive service projects and groups.
